hello my name is Josiah Sally white and welcome to the first interview on Spotlight with Sally wipe my first interview e is dr. Jamie Hembree the superintendent of McCormick County School District tell me a little bit about yourself how did you choose this field of work first of all thank you for having me on the show and I chose this bill to work because I always wanted to be a teacher whatever I grew up and my parents were both teachers my mom was a kindergarten teacher my dad was actually a middle school science teacher so it's kind of in my blood to go into education so I chose and at that point I kind of continue to progress in my career after I've been a teacher for about eight years then I decided that I wanted to be a math coach a Christian coach after that I decided that hey this is pretty but I think I want to try being an assistant principal so it just kept going on and on and on I went from assistant principal to principal eventually to becoming superintendent here in McCormick County School District so I know you're a little newsham where are you from and what made you want to come to McCormick I am actually originally from Parkersburg West Virginia it's about probably eight and a half hours away from here but when I graduated call engine that was a Marshall University I decided I wanted to move to the Carolinas so I got my first teaching job right outside of Charlotte North Carolina and then from there I moved to South Carolina and how I ended up in Mccormick I actually saw the opening for superintendent and I always knew I want to be a superintendent in a small community is a small school where I can know everyone's name and be able to be real Hands-On so I applied to be the superintendent I've never had actually been here I never actually visited McCormick but here I am now and I'm loving it well you named a few places have you moved around a lot since started teaching as far as moving around like I said I've moved I've lived in three different states West Virginia North Carolina and South Carolina but I found like I was ready to go to that neck step in my career so those were actually the only moves that I've made whenever I've decided okay it's time to try that the next thing what are your goals for McCormick County School District who is I just want the kids in Mccormick to have a world-class education and what I mean by that is I want the instruction here at the high school the middle school elementary school to be rigorous I want our kids to graduate McCormick high school knowing that the road from McCormick's you can leave to go anywhere and I also want students in our world town that have the same opportunities as kids from much bigger cities so fast the big umbrella is provided world-class education and I can tell you this year I was focused on four different thing my first goal has been to increase student achievement my second goal has been to develop leadership and when I talk developing leadership I want to develop leadership among our administrators are teachers and even our students to strengthen our Community Partnership and really get people in Mccormick stew man and see our schools and know what we stand for and see what resources they can have the offer us and then the 4th goal is just to continue developing a culture and pride I want our students our staff everyone to be so proud Beaver McCormick I know you're kind of at the top of the food chain education-wise but where would you like your career to be 5 years from now I'm years from now I hope I'm still here in this room and I will tell you that I moved to McCormick when I became superintendent my husband I bought a house here and we're planning on staying for a very long time we really really like it here and I really want to see the school system before Worden I really want to see you our students progress this is actually women's History Month do you have any advice for female students just thinking about what their career might be in the future for really good question the most important advice I have is that the sky's the limit and used to be years and years ago women can think that they only had a few career choices and now they can be anything they want to be we're seeing more women in what years were saying more women who want to be doctors and years and years ago somebody told me that a female should not be leaders and I obviously did not take advice and I continue to Career progress and it's led me to this role now so just for the sky's the limit you can do anything you want to do well we're glad you didn't take their advice you've brought so much good stuff to McCormick's and a little bit on the personal side you mentioned you were married how long have you been married I have been married for 11 years do you have any children I have a stepson yes and he is 23 and he is in the Navy is he actually is a submarine guy so he spends about half of a year under the water that's cool and a little bit of kidding type if you could have any superpower what would that power be and why but honestly this one is not that complicated but I guess it is complicated but I wish I could fly I really wish that I could fly because I feel my days are so busy and since I'm always moving from one thing to the next and so I could just fly the maybe I could have more time in my day to do the things that I need to do and let's end it off with a joke okay so knock knock cuz they're do we do we do we have any school tomorrow staff who is closed tomorrow well where I'm so glad you decided to come be interviewed by me and thank you I hope everyone has a great day thank you for shy and I think you
